Anthony Kim sets course record for AT&T National lead

__________________________________________

Defending AT&T National champion Anthony Kim shot a Congressional course record 62 to take an early lead in the AT&T National. Tournament host Tiger Woods shot a 64 later the same day to clock in tied for second place after one round with D.A. Points and Bryce Molder.

The low scores for much of the field were largely propelled by late Wednesday rains that left Congressional's Blue Course in Bethesda, Maryland soft and relatively easy to play. Woods in particular had hoped for a harder, more difficult course to make his own tournament a more worthy challenge.

As noted by the Washington Post, Kim is attempting his own comeback at the National, having suffered a series of injuries including a thumb issue since last year's event.

Metro Red Line trains back up to normal speeds

__________________________________________

The Metro system has been granted permission by the NTSB to resume running trains through its Red Line at normal speeds for the holiday, effective Friday. The only exception will be for the segment between the Fort Totten and Takoma stations hit by last week's tragic accident. Trains will continue to slow through that stretch of track in Northeast Washington, D.C.

The resumption of regular speed service should go some way in alleviating the overcrowding and seemingly endless delays that have plagued Red Line riders since the accident. The timing was largely guided by a desire to meet the demand expected to rise for Independence Day weekend festivities.

With the status of automated track circuits still in flux though, Metrorail will continue operating in manual mode for the foreseeable future. Additionally, further delays caused by the NTSB investigation of the Red Line accident near Fort Totten are still possible.

Maryland Maniacs to play postseason on the road

__________________________________________

The Maryland Maniacs indoor football organization announced Thursday that its entire postseason run will be on the road, despite the team having earned home advantage for at least one playoff contest.

"Unforeseen circumstances" were cited by the Maniacs' organization for its away-only postseason schedule. A Rochester Raiders press release cited an unspecified arena conflict with the Maniacs. Maryland normally plays home games at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Maryland had earned a first-round bye and home advantage for its second round playoff matchup by finishing atop the Indoor Football League's Atlantic Division. By rule, Maryland should have been allocated home advantage over RiverCity based on regular season record or Rochester based on head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Maniacs will still get the first-round bye but now must play at either Rochester or the RiverCity Rage on the weekend of July 25 to advance further into the postseason. Should the Maniacs win their divisional playoff game, a conference championship matchup would also take place away from home on or about August 1. All Maniacs postseason games will be vidstreamed via B2LiveTV.com.

Tiger Woods' AT&T National tournament tees off

__________________________________________

The third edition of official play in the AT&T National tournament teed off early Thursday at Congressional County Club in Bethesda, Md. Tournament host Tiger Woods did not get to play or even appear at last year's National due to injury but is back this year, looking to stake a claim on his own event. Woods will tee off at 1:02 p.m. EDT.

Defending champion Anthony Kim is looking to reestablish himself as well, not having won another PGA Tour event since last year's title. Kim teed off at 8 a.m. Other golfers at Congressional this week include U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover and longtime golf star Vijay Singh. Most name PGA golfers though have opted to skip this event.

This year will be the last chance for Washington, D.C. area golf fans to enjoy the AT&T National for awhile as it will be moved to metro Philadelphia while the Congressional blue course is prepared for the 2011 U.S. Open.
