Suspicions that Tuesday's Northern Virginia earthquake was stronger than first measured have proven valid. A revised report from the U.S. Geological Survey placed the magnitude of the May 6 early afternoon quake as a 2.0, up from the originally reported 1.8. The epicenter was also rereported as being closer to North Springfield, Virginia, not Annandale as earlier stated.
Witnesses to the 1:30 p.m. event heard a sonic-style boom followed by a ground rumbling. Regardless of the numbers though, the quake only rattled the nerves of Northern Virginians without causing any damage or injuries.
