The Virginia Tech Hokies established early control of their neutral site season opener in Charlotte but were unable to fend off a feisty East Carolina comeback, falling 27-22. East Carolina returned a blocked fourth quarter punt for the winning score over the #17 ranked Virginia Tech squad.
In other games, the Maryland Terrapins struggled to defeat FCS (I-AA) foe Delaware 14-7 in a battle marked by the pulling of starting Terrapins quarterback Jordan Steffy. The Virginia Cavaliers were blown out at home by the #3 USC Trojans, 52-7. The one true shining light came from the Navy Midshipmen who didn't need their usual starting quarterback to beat the I-AA Towson Tigers, 41-13.
