Extreme Cold Watch (1/31/26, 2/1/26)

An Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect from 7 pm Saturday, January 31 to 1 pm Sunday, February 1, 2026 including the following jurisdictions.

MARYLAND: western Allegany, Garrett.
VIRGINIA: western Highland, northern/central Blue Ridge.
WEST VIRGINIA: western Grant, western Mineral, western Pendleton.

…EXTREME COLD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON…

WHAT…For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 15 below expected. For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 below possible.

WHERE…In Maryland, Eastern Garrett, Extreme Western Allegany, and Western Garrett Counties. In Virginia, Central Virginia Blue Ridge and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, and Western Highland County. In West Virginia, Western Grant, Western Mineral, and Western Pendleton Counties.

WHEN…For the Cold Weather Advisory, until 11 AM EST Saturday. For the Extreme Cold Watch, from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon.

IMPACTS…Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Additional Cold Weather Headlines are expected at times through the end of the week as the region remains in an Arctic airmass.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
